SPRINGSTEEN CENTER FOR AMERICAN MUSIC

Opened in June this year at Monmouth University, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music (BSCAM) is a new cultural hub dedicated to the history of music in the USA and Bruce Springsteen's work in particular. The building, which covers an area of about 2,800 square meters, houses exhibition rooms about the artist's music and American music in general, the Springsteen archive, a 240-seat auditorium for concerts, lectures and video screenings, as well as exhibition spaces for temporary displays.

Designed as a multifunctional hub, the building is located on a site that harks back to Springsteen's early days, when the artist performed at Monmouth University and in the Jersey Shore area. The building, which spans two floors, has a functional rectangular structure with generous proportions and a linear layout. Visitors enter via a long walkway that shapes the geometry of the interior space. Large windows let natural light into the double-height lobby and create immediate interaction with the outdoors. The exhibition rooms are located on the left, set over two levels, while the auditorium is on the right.

The landscape, designed in partnership with LaGuardia Design Group, enhances biodiversity and manages stormwater through bioswales and storage systems. The vegetation mainly consists of native grasses and perennial flowering plants. The designers even selected various species of native trees, including juniper, tupelo, oak, and maple. The facade, made of Corten steel cladding panels, recalls New Jersey's industrial heritage, with its shipyards and factories. Inside, a structure made of European red spruce from sustainable sources is shaped out of glued laminated timber (GLT) and cross-laminated timber (CLT). The wood is left natural to showcase its authenticity, while the surfaces of the custom furniture are made from resin-impregnated paper, a material commonly used for making guitar fingerboards.

The auditorium is the heart of the center's public programming and is designed to host concerts, lectures and screenings. Thin vertical wooden slats are designed both to give a human scale to the large space and to define and unify the curved surfaces of the interior walls while, at the same time, concealing acoustic panels. The floor made of wooden blocks is highly durable, while also highlighting the growth rings of the wood. A full-height glass wall by the stage allows natural light to filter in, visually connecting the building to the surrounding campus. A lighting system on the ceiling that evokes a "starry sky" creates an immersive atmosphere, inspired by night shows along the Jersey Shore. The exhibition layout, curated by C&G Partners, includes eight galleries featuring rare objects, interactive experiences, iconic photographs, an interactive rehearsal studio and an immersive experience focused around concerts.

In line with COOKFOX's biophilic design strategies, the staff workspaces at the center are lit by natural light; wood and other natural materials are used throughout the building, while views of nature take centre stage in the main lobby, auditorium and archive’s study area. More than just a museum, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music is a place for congregating, remembering the past and being inspired that is deeply connected to its geographical/cultural setting.
