Sustainable Nuclear Power by Pininfarina, Newcleo and
Fincantieri
Designed
by Pininfarina, Newcleo - a next-generation nuclear start-up - and Fincantieri,
the TL-40 liquid-lead cooled reactor incorporates passive safety systems that
avoid any risk of nuclear accidents drawing on the physical laws governing how reactors
operate. These
reactors can also get rid of the nuclear waste generated by conventional
nuclear power plants through a virtuous multi-cycle system that burns the waste,
generating clean, cheap and virtually inexhaustible energy supply.

Pininfarina has designed the reactor with aesthetic/symbolic features that make it more visually attractive and appealing, while making easier for the public to understand and explore. The fibreglass outer shell, which evokes the design of a large vase, features a pattern of closely spaced slats creating a sense of suspension and lightness, in stark contrast to its actual mass of over two thousand kilograms. All the component parts of the installation will also be reused after the exhibition at one of newcleo’s future locations

As Giovanni de Niederhäusern, Senior Vice President of Architecture and Product Design at Pininfarina pointed out, “the partnership with Newcleo provided Pininfarina with the chance to use its design expertise to enhance a form of technology that could potentially revolutionise the energy sector. Design is essential for promoting the technology, its benefits, and the low level risks associated with next-generation nuclear reactors.”
