BALKRISHNA DOSHI, DOSHI RETREAT, VITRA CAMPUS

Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein has recently unveiled Doshi Retreat, a contemplative space designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Balkrishna Doshi in close partnership with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof. Inspired by Indian spirituality, it offers a sensory journey focused on sound and serenity.

The main structure of Doshi Retreat is made of forged and moulded XCarb® steel, an innovative low-carbon material mainly comprised of scrap steel and made entirely from renewable energy. Generously donated by ArcelorMittal, this steel develops a warm natural patina over time through controlled corrosion. The sinuous walls guide visitors along a path full of unexpected turns and shifting perspectives, enhancing a sense of discovery within the space.

A sophisticated sound system integrated in concave niches in the floor diffuses a sequence of gong and ceramic flute sounds along the layout. As you approach the central structure, the sound disperses across the metal walls and interacts with moving bodies. This sensory experience culminates in a short arched tunnel that leads visitors into the contemplation hall.

The organically rounded space contains a basin for rainwater around its base, two large semicircular stone benches, and a gong in the middle. Above, the ceiling partially encloses the hall, creating an opening for light, air, and rainfall. A hand-hammered brass mandala, made in India, adorns the ceiling, refracting the light.
