UMBRELLA PAVILION VENICE BIENNALE 2025


CHINESE PAPER UMBRELLA BY MA YANSONG / MAD, VENEZIA, ITALY



Chinese Paper Umbrella est l’installation réalisée par MAD dans le jardin extérieur du Pavillon de la Chine à l’Arsenal pour la Biennale d’Architecture de Venise. Inspirée du parapluie traditionnel chinois en papier huilé, l'installation utilise le papier Xuan comme matériau principal.

Chinese Paper Umbrella is presented in the outdoor garden of the China Pavilion of the China Pavilion at the Arsenal for the  19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia through November 23, 2025. Inspired by the traditional Chinese oil paper umbrella, the installation uses Xuan paper as its main material.

Chinese Paper Umbrella è l'installazione creata da MAD nel giardino esterno del Padiglione Cina all'Arsenale per la Biennale di Architettura di Venezia, fino al 23 novembre 2025. Ispirata al tradizionale ombrello cinese di carta oleata, l'installazione utilizza la carta Xuan come materiale principale.


Ce papier est enduit plusieurs fois d'huile de tung pour le rendre à la fois translucide et résistant à l'eau. La structure donne une nouvelle forme et une nouvelle dimension à cet art ancien, le transformant en un espace extérieur offrant ombre et abri de la pluie.

 

The paper is coated multiple times with tung oil to make it both translucent and water-resistant. The structure gives new form and scale to this ancient craft, transforming it into an outdoor space that offers shade from the sun and shelter from the rain.

 

Questa carta è rivestita più volte con olio di tung per renderla traslucida e resistente all'acqua. La struttura conferisce una nuova forma e dimensione a quest'antica arte, trasformandola in uno spazio esterno che offre ombra e riparo dalla pioggia.



Passer sous le parasol donne l'impression d'entrer dans un théâtre intime en plein air, où les visiteurs découvrent des jeux d'ombres et de lumières changeants, ainsi qu'une subtile différence de température entre l'intérieur et l'extérieur.

 

Stepping beneath the umbrella feels like entering an intimate open-air theatre, where visitors are immersed in shifting light and subtle atmospheric changes. Visitors experience shifting patterns of light and shadow, along with a subtle difference in temperature between inside and out.

 

Passare sotto la struttura dà la sensazione di entrare in un teatro all'aperto, dove i visitatori sperimentano mutevoli giochi di luci e ombre, oltre a una sottile differenza di temperatura tra interno ed esterno.



Un système de brumisation intégré s'active au sommet de la structure, rafraîchissant l'air et améliorant le confort des visiteurs. En plus, grâce au système Smart Dynamic Light (SDL) d'OPPLE Lighting, qui réagit aux variations de temps et de lumière du jour, le parasol se transforme en un pavillon d'ombres et de lumières, reflétant les rythmes du jour et de la nuit.

 

On hot, dry days, a built-in misting system activates at the top of the structure, cooling the air beneath and enhancing comfort for visitors. Inside the canopy, MAD has integrated OPPLE Lighting’s Smart Dynamic Light (SDL) system, which responds to changes in weather and daylight. As light moves across the oiled paper, the umbrella becomes a pavilion of shadow and glow, reflecting the rhythms of day and night.

 

Un sistema di nebulizzazione integrato nella parte superiore della struttura, permette di rinfrescare l'aria migliorando il comfort interno. Inoltre, grazie al sistema Smart Dynamic Light (SDL) di OPPLE Lighting, che reagisce alle variazioni meteorologiche e di luce naturale, il padiglione-ombrello si trasforma in un ambiente di luci e ombre, riflettendo i ritmi del giorno e della notte.



Avec le temps, le papier huilé jaunit naturellement, s'use et se dégrade lentement sous l'effet des intempéries et de la lumière du soleil offrant une réflexion poétique sur la manière dont l'architecture et le monde naturel pourraient coexister.

 

Over time, the oil paper will naturally yellow, wear, and slowly degrade with weather and sunlight. Its gradual disappearance underscores the structure’s impermanence and offers a poetic reflection on how architecture and the natural world might coexist in thoughtful response to our changing climate.

 

Col passare del tempo, la carta oliata ingiallisce, si usura e si degrada lentamente sotto l'azione degli agenti atmosferici e della luce solare, offrendo una riflessione poetica su come l'architettura e il mondo naturale possano coesistere.
