Après ses expositions remarquées au Musées Bourdelle et de l’Orangerie en 2023, Philippe Cognée (Nantes, 1957) présente une nouvelle interprétation du paysage chez TEMPLON Paris. Installées en une gigantesque frise, les toiles déroulent un panorama inattendu, aux réminiscences de scènes marines de Matthieu van Plattenberg ou Vincent Van Gogh. Comme toujours chez Philippe Cognée, virtuose de sa technique à l’encaustique, le sujet semble englouti par la cire, presque méconnaissable, flouté jusqu’à l’abstraction.

Following on from acclaimed exhibitions of his work at Paris’ Musée Bourdelle and Musée de l’Orangerie in 2023, Philippe Cognée (Nantes, 1957) is presenting his latest interpretation of landscapes TEMPLON Paris. The canvases are installed on a giant frieze, unfurling to display an unexpected panorama reminiscent of the seascapes painted by Matthieu van Plattenberg or Vincent Van Gogh. As ever, Philippe Cognée’s highly skilled use of his encaustic technique creates an impression of subjects engulfed in wax, almost unrecognisable, blurred to the point of abstraction.

Dopo le mostre ai musei Bourdelle e Orangerie nel 2023, Philippe Cognée (Nantes, 1957) presenta una nuova interpretazione del paesaggio alla gallerie Templon Paris. Installati in un gigantesco fregio, i dipinti dispiegano un panorama inaspettato, che ricorda le scene marine di Matthieu van Plattenberg o Vincent Van Gogh. Come sempre in Philippe Cognée, virtuoso della tecnica dell'encausto, il soggetto sembra inghiottito dalla cera, quasi irriconoscibile, sfumato fino all'astrazione.

Les scènes fascinent autant qu’elles inquiètent. La surface en dripping ou grattée, diluée, liquéfiée, confronte le spectateur à un dilemme : contempler une majestueuse nature en perdition ou agir. Chaque paysage se fait le constat d’un irréconciliable malentendu entre nature et humanité : une célébration de la beauté du monde hantée par l’angoisse climatique de nos sociétés.

The scenes he creates are fascinating and disturbing in equal measure. The dripping, scratched, diluted or liquified surfaces present the viewer with a dilemma: whether to contemplate nature in all her endangered majesty, or to act. Each landscape bears witness to an irreconcilable misunderstanding between nature and humanity, celebrating the beauty of a world haunted by the climate anxiety that consumes our societies.

Le scene sono tanto affascinanti quanto inquietanti. La superficie gocciolante o graffiata, diluita, liquefatta, pone l'osservatore di fronte a un dilemma: contemplare una natura maestosa in declino o agire. Ogni paesaggio riflette un'incomprensione insanabile tra natura e umanità: una celebrazione della bellezza del mondo ossessionato dall'ansia climatica delle nostre società.
