INNOBILIARE SUD OVEST (I.E NOT NOBLE) WITH A DOUBLE N

Il catalogo, a primo acchito, pare uno fra i tanti utilizzati dalle agenzie immobiliari per illustrare la propria mercanzia edilizia. A ben guardare, però, il nome dell’azienda non è Immobiliare Sud Ovest, ma Innobiliare (non nobile) con la doppia N. Più in basso, a scaraventarti definitivamente in una dimensione irreale, un sommarietto: scopri come investire in ciò che già ti appartiene. E, ancor più giù, ecco il nome dell’editore sprizzare buone notizie: Felici. Infine, nel primo risvolto di copertina, un’immagine sfocata di una persona irriconoscibile che forse non esiste. E ancora un sommario che illustra il contenuto specifico del libriccino commerciale, Speciale Bagnoli (area occidentale di Napoli)  laddove si decanta, con il tipico linguaggio stereotipato delle agenzie immobiliari, il prodotto da vendere. In realtà, ci troviamo di fronte a un’operazione artistica, una performance del fotografo napoletano Giovanni Scotti, la cui ricerca – svolta in collaborazione con Diego Mantoan, Chiara Zocchi, Ernesto Tedeschi e Lara Gaeta «apre una riflessione – come spiega il fotografo –  sul bene comune, attraverso la relazione che si instaura tra cittadini e territorio, ed è rivolta agli spazi di confine, tra l’abitato e l’inabitato, fotografati quando hanno già perduto la loro funzione». 

At first glance, the catalogue looks like any other used by real estate agencies to showcase their property listings. Upon closer inspection, however, the company name is not Immobiliare Sud Ovest, but Innobiliare (i.e not noble) with a double N. Further on, there is a small but highly confusing note that says: discover how to invest in what already belongs to you. And then after that the publisher's name that is so full of promise: Felici (Happy). Finally, on the inside front flap, there is a blurry image of an unrecognizable person who perhaps does not even exist. And then there is a summary outlining the specific content of a little business booklet called Speciale Bagnoli (western area of Naples), where the product to be sold is praised with the typical stereotypical language of real estate agencies. This is actually a sort of artwork, a performance by the Neapolitan photographer Giovanni Scotti, whose experimentation – carried out in partnership with Diego Mantoan, Chiara Zocchi, Ernesto Tedeschi, and Lara Gaeta – “prompts us to think about,” so the photographer explains, “the common good based on a relationship between local people and their surrounding community that is focused on borderline spaces between inhabited and uninhabited areas photographed after they have already lost their purpose.”

Scotti, presente con le sue opere in decine di mostre e autore di svariate pubblicazioni e iniziative culturali in Italia e all’estero, utilizza un linguaggio fotografico finalizzato ad aprire un dibattito sul patrimonio pubblico. Insomma, si tratta di un provocatorio falso d’autore, o meglio d’artista, perché «Innobiliare Sud Ovest (ISO) è ovviamente «fittizia ed eccentrica» e «mette in vendita beni comuni che apparterrebbero già ai cittadini». Il suo motto è:  «investi nel bene pubblico dequalificato» (a Bagnoli si parla, infatti, da decenni, di una riqualificazione, mai completata, del quartiere, circa 28.000 residenti, che è stato sede, via via, fra altre umane follie, di un campo profughi, una base Nato e un’acciaieria Italsider, mentre oggi si parla della ‘very glamour’ American’s Cup, visto l’accesso naturale al mare del sito). Innobiliare offre occasioni uniche al potenziale fruitore del catalogo, attraverso immagini, particolarissime e personalissime (è la complementarietà immagini-testo che conta…) centrate inizialmente sulla ex Base Nato (in realtà abbandonata al degrado da anni): da un teatro per i militari Usa «significativa testimonianza del razionalismo italiano» («da restaurare») a un ampio locale uso studio/ufficio, esposizione luminosa, con splendido affaccio sul golfo, fino a un bunker attrezzato, abitabile e cablato.

Scotti, whose works have been displayed in dozens of exhibitions, has written various publications and organised miscellaneous cultural projects in Italy and abroad, uses a photographic idiom aimed at encouraging debate on our public heritage. In short, this is a fake enteprise by a writer or rather an artist, because Innobiliare Sud Ovest (ISO) is obviously “fictitious and eccentric” and “puts up for sale assets that already belong to the general public”.  Its motto is: "invest in decommissioned public assets" (for decades now there has been talk of a (never completed) redevelopment of the Bagnoli neighbourhood, which has about 28,000 residents and is home, among other human follies, to a refugee camp, a NATO base, and an Italsider steel plant; meanwhile there is now even talk of it hosting the 'very glamourous' America's Cup given the site's natural access to the sea). Innobiliare offers unique opportunities for readers of its catalogue that shows an array of very peculiar and highly personalized images (what counts here is how the words and pictures are matched…) initially focused on the former NATO Base (that has, in fact,  been abandoned and left to rot for years): an arena for U.S. military personnel, a "significant testimony of Italian rationalism" ("in need of renovation") to be converted into a large studio/office space, a bright exhibition area with a splendid view of the gulf, which could even be turned into a fully-furnished, habitable and fully wired bunker.

A doppia pagina sconvolge un gigantesco insetto presumibilmente morto, zampette all’aria (visibile in 3D con appositi occhialini forniti dalla rivista) e la scritta diffida dalla concorrenza. Fra altre istruttive amenità, Innobiliare offre un lungomare con divieto di balneazione, da riqualificare (terreno non edificabile); un ex capannone industriale della ex acciaieria Italsider, da riconvertire, con possibilità di finanziamento pubblico e alcuni spazi industriali modello Ruhr, da recuperare, oltre che un polo siderurgico a vocazione turistica. Ancora una doppia pagina con gigantografie di una zanzara e un altro insetto entomologicamentenon ben individuabile (sempre visibili in 3D)  che annunciano: sempre meglio che stare a guardare. Infine, un terreno vulcanico «indisponibile all’uso privato, un’opportunità geotermica con suolo non edificabile»; tre affaroni, infine, in un parco dello sport, con rimpianto (sic) sportivo, pista ciclabile e area giochi per bambini. Persino un centro sportivo, «attrezzatissimo, attualmente sotto sequestro giudiziario», ma con «ottime prospettive». Un QR code per attivare la conversazione con l’agenzia e un cellulare della Innobiliare (presumibilmente falso) rappresentano l’epilogo dell’happening. Geniale. Michele Bazan Giordano.

There is a shocking giant double page image of a presumably dead insect with its legs in the air (visible in 3D with special glasses provided by the magazine)with the words “do not trust our competitors” written beneath it. Among other eye-catching attractions, Innobiliare offers a waterfront where swimming is prohibited, in need of redevelopment (non-buildable land); a former industrial warehouse, which used to belong to Italsider steelworks, to be repurposed, with the possibility of public funding, and some industrial spaces modelled on the Ruhr area in need of redevelopment, as well as an old steel works focused on tourism. Yet another double page spread features giant images of a mosquito and another entomologically unidentified insect (again visible in 3D) that says: it is better than just watching.  Last but not least, a volcanic plot of land 'unavailable for private use, a geothermal opportunity on non-buildable soil'; finally, three golden opportunities in a sports park that is now nothing but a relic from the past, a cycle path, and a playground for children. There is even a “fully furbished” sports center, currently under judicial seizure,' but with 'excellent prospects.' A QR code for getting in touch with the agency and a phone number for Innobiliare (presumably fake) bring matters to a close. Quite brilliant! Michele Bazan Giordano
