SERRALVES MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, THE CENTURY OF GEHRY

Inaugurée en juin et ouverte jusqu'au 30 décembre 2026, la rétrospective présentée par le musée Serralves retrace le parcours de l'architecte lauréat du prix Pritzker 1989 à travers des maquettes, des sculptures, des dessins, du mobilier et des objets, depuis ses premières expérimentations jusqu'à ses réalisations les plus emblématiques – telles que le musée Guggenheim de Bilbao, la Fondation Louis Vuitton à Paris et le Walt Disney Concert Hall à Los Angeles – explorant son approche radicale des dimensions formelles, structurelles et matérielles de ses bâtiments.

The retrospective presented by Serralves Museum, which opened in June and will run until 30^th December 2026, traces the career of 1989 Pritzker Prize-winning architect through scale models, sculptures, drawings, furniture and artefacts from his early experiments to his most iconic buildings – such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles – exploring his radical approach to the stylistic, structural and material aspects of his buildings.

Inaugurata a giugno fino al 30 dicembre 2026, la retrospettiva presentata dal Museo Serralves ripercorre la carriera dell'architetto Pritzker Prize 1989 attraverso modelli in scala, sculture, disegni, mobili e oggetti, dai primi esperimenti fino agli edifici più iconici – quali il Museo Guggenheim di Bilbao, la Fondation Louis Vuitton di Parigi e la Walt Disney Concert Hall di Los Angeles – esplorando il suo approccio radicale alla dimensione formale, strutturale e materica dei suoi edifici.

L'exposition est divisée en huit chapitres thématiques, analysant la combinaison d'instinct et d'intellect dans le processus créatif de Gehry : de l'intimité rebelle de sa maison de Santa Monica à la chorégraphie urbaine de la faculté de droit de Loyola, de la monumentalité fragmentée des bureaux Chiat/Day aux vagues de titane du Guggenheim de Bilbao et aux voiles musicales du Walt Disney Concert Hall. À travers des croquis et des maquettes de projets en cours et inachevés, l'architecture prend vie comme une force dynamique et humaine, à la fois pratique et imaginative, façonnée par la créativité, l'émotion et l'expression poétique.

The exhibition is divided into eight theme sections analysing that distinctive mix of instinct and intellect characterising Gehry's creativity: the rebellious intimacy of his Santa Monica house, the urban choreography of Loyola Law School, the fragmented monumentality of the Chiat/Day offices, the titanium waves of the Guggenheim in Bilbao and the musical sails of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Sketches and scale models of ongoing or undeveloped projects bring his architecture to life as something dynamic, human and, at the same time, practical and imaginative, shaped by creativity, emotion and stylistic expressivity. 

La mostra si articola in otto capitoli tematici, analizzando la combinazione di istinto e intelletto nel processo creativo di Gehry: dall'intimità ribelle della sua casa di Santa Monica alla coreografia urbana della Loyola Law School, dalla monumentalità frammentata degli uffici Chiat/Day alle onde di titanio del Guggenheim di Bilbao e alle vele musicali della Walt Disney Concert Hall. Attraverso schizzi e modelli di progetti in corso o non realizzati, l'architettura prende vita come qualcosa di dinamico e umano, al contempo pratico e immaginativo, plasmato da creatività, emozione ed espressione poetica.

L'exposition révèle également le dialogue et les relations entre Gehry et d'autres artistes et architectes, notamment Álvaro Siza, avec lequel il a collaboré au plan directeur de l'ArtCenter College of Design de Pasadena et dont l'amitié a favorisé de nombreux échanges entre les États-Unis et le Portugal. De Los Angeles à Berlin, de Paris à New York, de Sydney à Toronto, les œuvres sélectionnées présentent un artiste qui a aboli les frontières entre sculpture et architecture, gravité et fluidité, mémoire et futur.

The exhibition also reveals the dialogue and interactive relationships between Gehry and other artists and architects, particularly with Álvaro Siza, with whom he worked on the master plan for the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, and whose friendship led to numerous exchanges between the United States and Portugal.From Los Angeles to Berlin, from Paris to New York, from Sydney to Toronto, the selected works showcase an artist who has blurred the boundaries between sculpture and architecture, gravity and fluidity, memory and the future.

La mostra rivela inoltre il dialogo e le relazioni tra Gehry e altri artisti e architetti, in particolare con Álvaro Siza, con il quale ha collaborato al piano regolatore dell'ArtCenter College of Design di Pasadena e la cui amicizia ha dato vita a numerosi scambi tra Stati Uniti e Portogallo. Da Los Angeles a Berlino, da Parigi a New York, da Sydney a Toronto, le opere selezionate presentano un artista che ha dissolto i confini tra scultura e architettura, gravità e fluidità, memoria e futuro.
