The camouflaging process, a central feature of Liu Bolin's work, takes
on an extra layer of meaning here. Hours of body painting done in close
connection with the surroundings turn the artist's body into an extension of
the surfaces around him: stones, plants, shadows, colours and architectural features
are recreated on his skin until the illusion of disappearance is attained. But
just when the body seems to vanish into space,
it pops out even more, inviting us to think about our memory of places.
