A new “charter”
It is worth pointing out that throughout the history of architecture, on various occasions and across many centuries, architects and town-planners have constantly attempted to design the “ideal city” without ever really succeeding, but they have at least nurtured debate and produced some significant input, as in the cases of Brasilia, Chandigarh, Islamabad etc. Now, for the first time ever, the number of cars in free inner-city spaces has exceeded the tolerance limit in almost all major cities and metropolises across the planet and, as well as polluting the air, they are creating previously unheard-of problems in terms of occupying ground space, issues to which there seems to be no apparent solution.
