UNStudio, in collaboration with Nihon Sekkei, recently completed the Shanghai Jiuguang Center. The design for this brand new retail destination, which sits in the middle of a bustling Shanghai neighbourhood merges an advanced commercial ecosystem with a human-centric, customer-friendly destination.

Alors que Nihon Sekkei a été invité à développer l'enveloppe extérieure du centre commercial, UNStudio a été chargé de concevoir le centre commercial comme une destination non seulement pour les clients mais pour tous les citoyens. Cela impliquait la conception d'une cour, au cœur du centre commercial, et de ses façades, de l'intérieur du centre et d’une terrasse panoramique publique.
While Nihon Sekkei were asked to develop the outer shell of the retail center, UNStudio was tasked with fleshing out the mall as a placemaking destination for customers and the larger community. This included the design of the inner courtyard and its facades, the full interior of the mall and a public rooftop terrace. The design includes a central courtyard and landscape area that sits at the heart of the mall. This courtyard not only serves as an event space for the mall itself, but also provides a destination for the wider community.
Mentre a Nihon Sekkei è stato chiesto di sviluppare l'involucro esterno del centro commerciale, UNStudio ha avuto il compito concepire il centro commerciale come una destinazione non solo per i clienti ma per tutti i cittadini. Ciò ha comportato il progetto di una corte al centro del centro commerciale e delle sue facciate, l'interno del centro commerciale e una terrazza panoramica pubblica.

La succession de balcons qui rythment les façades de la cour intérieure sont reliées aux espaces vides, adoucissant la relation entre l'intérieur et l'extérieur, tandis que la finition texturée nacrée des carreaux de céramique souligne la lumière du jour qui tombe sur différentes zones de la façade et crée une dynamique de réflex tout au long de la journée.
The various balconies that give rhythm to the facades of the courtyard are connected to the void spaces reinforcing the relationship between interior and exterior, while the pearlescent material finish of the ceramic tiles emphasises the daylight falling on different areas of the facade and creating dynamic reflections throughout the day.
La successione di balconi che ritmano le facciate della corte interna si raccordano agli spazi vuoti stemperando il rapporto tra interno ed esterno, mentre la finitura materica perlata delle piastrelle di ceramica enfatizza la luce del giorno che cade su diverse zone della facciata e crea riflessi dinamici durante tutta la giornata.

La relation intense entre l'extérieur et l'intérieur se reflète également à l'intérieur avec l'organisation de trois vides le long du périmètre de la cour. De longues bandes de fenêtres le long de la cour laissent entrevoir les intérieurs, tandis que la lumière pénètre les espaces vides à travers la façade, créant des espaces verticaux inondés de lumière naturelle. Chaque vide a sa propre identité et matérialisation distinctes, basées sur trois thèmes différents qui relient verticalement l'expérience d'achat et aident à orienter les utilisateurs dans les grandes zones de vente au détail.
The strong relationship between the exterior and interior continues in the organisation of three internal voids which are located on the perimeter of the courtyard. Long bands of windows along the courtyard enable glimpses to the interior spaces, while light enters the void spaces through the facade, creating vertical spaces flooded with daylight.
L’intensa relazione tra esterno e interno si riflette anche all’interno con l’organizzazione di tre vuoti lungo il perimetro del cortile. Lunghe fasce di finestre lungo il cortile lasciano intravedere gli ambienti interni, mentre la luce penetra negli spazi vuoti attraverso la facciata, creando spazi verticali inondati di luce naturale. Ogni vuoto ha una propria identità e materializzazione distinta, basata su tre diversi temi che collegano verticalmente l'esperienza di acquisto e aiutano a orientare gli utenti all'interno delle grandi aree di vendita al dettaglio.
