En 2020, alors qu’il n’avait que trente ans, David Telerman, qui a un atelier à Paris et un diplôme en histoire de l’art et en architecture, a réalisé le McNeal 020, un bâtiment souterrain entre architecture et land art, creusé dans le désert du sud de l'Arizona, près de la frontière du Mexique.

 

David Telerman, who has a firm in Paris and a degree in the history of art and architecture, designed ‘McNeal 020’ in 2020 at the age of just thirty. ‘McNeal 020’ is an underground building that is something between architecture and Land Art excavated in the southern Arizona desert close to the border with Mexico.

 

David Telerman, uno studio a Parigi e una laura in storia dell’arte e in architettura, ha realizzato nel 2020 a soli trent’anni, McNeal 020 , un edificio ipogeo, tra architettura e Land Art,  scavato nel deserto dell'Arizona meridionale, vicino al confine con il Messico.

 

 

Ce projet est le résultat d'un parcours concret et intellectuel mené sur le "terrain" afin de réaliser une architecture à la fois rigoureuse et poétique qui renvoie à l'immensité du désert américain. "Il s’agissait d’entreprendre, à la suite de mes études, la réalisation d’une œuvre personnelle qui exprime ce que l’architecture représente pour moi".

 

The project is the outcome of an experimental intellectual/practical “on-site” project to design a carefully constructed piece of architecture that is also poetically stylish and evokes the vastness of this American desert. “After completing my studies, I wanted to experiment with real building in the form of a personal design reflecting what architecture means to make”.

 

Il progetto è il frutto di un percorso pratico e intellettuale sperimentato sul “campo” per realizzare un’architettura rigorosa e al contempo poetica che rimanda alla vastità del deserto americano. “Terminati i miei studi volevo sperimentare la realtà del costruire con un’opera personale che riflettesse  ciò che l’architettura rappresenta per me”.

Après avoir visité plusieurs sites en Californie et en Arizona, David Telerman est resté fasciné par la planéité du désert qui borde la frontière mexicaine et par la nature argileuse du sol, si différentes des étendues de sable de la Californie. Il conçoit une œuvre hypogée creusant le sol et le découpant. Quatre pans d’escaliers définissent un lieu évidé, fermé en son centre par l’espace intérieur. Au sommet et nivelé au sol se dessinent le toit et ses bras de longueurs variables qui s’étirent au plat de l’argile séché.

 

After visiting a number of sites in California and Arizona, Telerman was intrigued by the flatness of the desert on the Mexican border and the claylike quality of the soil, quite different from the expanses of sand in California. The architecture excavates into the ground, sectioning it through the four stepped sides of an upturned pyramid creating a central space approximately 3 metres above ground. The perimeter of its flat roof and horizontal “arms” of varying length accompany visitors along a pathway through this hidden work of architecture that is revealed by projections of light.

 

Dopo aver visitato alcuni siti in California e Arizona, Telerman è rimasto affascinato dalla planarità del deserto alla frontiera messicana e dalla qualità argillosa della terra, ben diversa dalle distese di sabbia della California. L’architettura scava il terreno, lo seziona attraverso quattro lati gradinati di una piramide rovesciata che definiscono uno spazio centrale a circa 3 metri dal livello del suolo. Sul terreno il perimetro di un tetto piano e le orizzontali di “braccia” di lunghezze variabili che accompagnano il visitatore in un percorso alla scoperta di questa architettura nascosta, rivelata dai tagli di luce.

 

 

David Telerman a opté pour du béton armé coulé sur place. Le chantier a duré cinq mois, de janvier à mai 2020, avec la contribution de l’entreprise PureBuild, basée à Tucson, renommée dans la construction en pisé, et la collaboration de Shaoshu Zhang et de l’ingénierie structurelle de Bollinger+Grohmann.

 

David Telerman chose site-cast reinforced concrete and building work took five months from January-May 2020 with the help of the Tuscan company, PureBuild, specialists in works made of clay, in partnership with Shaoshu Zhang and the structural engineering expertise of Bollinger+Grohmann.

 

David Telerman ha scelto il cemento armato gettato in opera, 5 mesi di cantiere da gennaio a  maggio 2020 grazie al contributo dell’azienda di Tuscon, PureBuild specializzata in opere in argilla, alla collaborazione di Shaoshu Zhang e all’ingegneria strutturale di Bollinger+Grohmann.
