Le musée, installé dans l'ancienne prison d'Orsara di Puglia, se situe en plein cœur du centre historique. Le rez-de-chaussée occupe une place importante dans le Palazzo De Paulis-Jamele, un édifice du XVIIe siècle, l'un des plus beaux bâtiments d'Orsara, situé près des remparts, non loin de la Porta di Greci.

The museum, accommodated in what was once Orsara Prison in Puglia, is located in the old town centre. The ground floor is a significant part of Palazzo De Paulis – Jamele, dating back to the 17^th century, one of the most important aristocratic homes in the historic fabric of Orsara, positioned right alongside the city walls near Greci Gate.

Il Museo realizzato nell’ex carcere di Orsara di Puglia è situato nel centro storico. Il piano terra collocato è parte rilevante del Palazzo De Paulis – Jamele risalente al XVII sec., tra i più importanti palazzi signorili del tessuto edilizio del centro storico di Orsara, posizionato a ridosso delle mura di cinta vicino alla porta di Greci.

 

De 1839 à 1996, le rez-de-chaussée était occupé d’une prison, un lieu emblématique chargé d'histoire. Après 28 ans d'abandon, il fut acquis en 2023 par Andreas Benedikt Lúthi, un artiste suisse de passage à Orsara, pour y installer son Musée d'Art Contemporain Andreas Lúthi. Captivé par l'atmosphère unique de la ville et par la gentillesse et l'hospitalité de ses habitants, Andreas est de plus en plus convaincu que ce lieu est idéal pour son art. Un art intemporel, infini, lent et contemplatif. Une antithèse parfaite au rythme effréné de la ville.

The ground floor was used as a correctional facility from 1839-1996, a place rich in history and legend. After 28 years of being left abandoned, it was purchased in 2023 by Andreas Benedikt LUTHI, a Swiss artist visiting Orsara, to house the Andreas Lùthi Contemporary Art Museum. Andreas, captivated by the town’s unique atmosphere and the warmth and hospitality of its people, became increasingly convinced this could be the right place for his art. Art that is timeless, infinite, slow, and contemplative. An antithesis to the frenzy of cities.

Il piano terra fu destinato già dal 1839 fino al 1996 a casa Mandamentale,un luogo ricco di storie e di storia. Dopo 28 anni di abbandono, è stato acquistato nel 2023 da Andreas Benedikt LUTHI un artista svizzero in visita ad Orsara da destinare a sede del Museo di Arte Contemporanea Andreas Lùthi. Andreas, conquistato dall’atmosfera particolare che circonda il paese, dalla cordialità e dall’accoglienza della gente, è convinto sempre più che questo possa essere il posto giusto per la sua Arte. Un’arte senza tempo, infinita, lenta e contemplativa.  Un’antitesi alla frenesia delle città.

 

Je me souviens de notre première visite en mars 2023. Nous sommes entrés dans un bâtiment abandonné depuis 1996, année de la fermeture de la prison. L'intérieur, à nos yeux, semblait inchangé depuis 160 ans ; l'atmosphère carcérale y était encore palpable. Lors de cette visite, mon premier réflexe a été d'imaginer la transformation d'une structure fermée – la prison – en une structure ouverte – le musée – rêvant déjà du formidable potentiel des voûtes une fois dégagées les épaisses couches de plâtre et nettoyées grâce à un travail de restauration minutieux.

The first time we visited the facility was back in March 2023. We entered a building that had been abandoned since 1996, the year the local prison was shut down. Inside, it looked the same as it had for 160 years; I still had the feel of a  prison. My first thought upon inspecting the place was to imagine it being transformed from an enclosed structure – prison - into an open structure – museum - already envisaging the great potential of the building's vaults after freeing them from a thick layer of plaster and cleaning them through careful renovation work.

La prima visita alla struttura ricordo è stata nel Marzo del 2023. Entravamo in un edificio abbandonato dal 1996, l’anno della chiusura del carcere mandamentale. L’interno, ai nostri occhi, si mostrava come era stato per 160 anni, ancora si respirava l’aria di una struttura carceraria. La mia prima idea istintiva durante il sopralluogo fu quella di immaginare la trasformazione da una struttura chiusa - il carcere - a una struttura aperta - il museo -, sognando già la grande potenzialità delle volte dell’edificio dopo averle liberate dallo spessore consistente dell’intonaco  e la loro pulizia con un accurato intervento di restauro.

 

Le bâtiment comprend sept salles et une cour, pour une superficie totale d'environ 250 m² + 90 m². Les travaux ont débuté en juin 2023 et se sont achevés le 30 juillet 2024, en vue d'une inauguration prévue le 1er août 2024. L'objectif principal du projet était la restauration de la structure existante. Le second objectif était une intervention critique réfléchie afin de redonner vie à une œuvre architecturale qui aborde les complexités du monde contemporain, notamment grâce au choix audacieux des couleurs et des matériaux utilisés pour les nouveaux sols en pierre et en bois. Dès ses premiers mois d'existence, MACAL s'est imposé comme un acteur incontournable non seulement pour Orsara, mais aussi pour l'ensemble de la région. Mario Pisani

The property has 7 rooms plus a courtyard covering a total area of about 250 sqm + 90 sqm. The work, which began in June 2023, was completed on 30^th July 2024, in time for the official opening scheduled for 1^st August, 2024. The project was mainly focused on renovating the old structure, with plenty of attention also paid to bringing  the architecture back to life by interacting closely with the complexity of the contemporary world through a striking colour scheme and carefully chosen materials for the new stone and wooded floors. Just a few months after opening, MACAL has already proven to be a real attraction not just for Orsara but for the entire local area. Mario Pisani

L’ immobile si compone di 7 vani più un cortile per una superficie complessiva di circa 250 mq + 90 mq. I lavori iniziati nel giugno del 2023 sono terminati il 30 luglio 2024 per l’inaugurazione programmata per il 1° agosto 2024. Il primo obiettivo del progetto è stato finalizzato al recupero del preesistente l’altro obiettivo è stato un calibrato intervento critico in modo da far rivivere un’opera architettonica nel confronto intenso con la complessità del mondo contemporaneo anche con la potenza della scelta dei colori oltre che per i materiali utilizzati per la nuova pavimentazione in pietra e legno. Già nei primi mesi di apertura il MACAL risulta essere una presenza fondamentale non solo per Orsara ma per tutto il contesto territoriale.  L’idea di Andreas Lùthi è quella  di coinvolgere – con il pieno supporto dell’ Amministrazione Comunale di  Orsara - artisti, personalità e realtà associative. Il MACAL, è stato patrocinato dall’Amministrazione Comunale fondamentale il supporto del Sindaco Mario Simonelli, si auspica un coinvolgimento sempre maggiore tra pubblico e privato finalizzato ad una convenzione da sottoscrivere in un futuro prossimo.
