HELL IS US! by Jacqueline Ceresoli
Rome is already hellish in itself, it is impossible to grasp its complexity. The same feeling of disorientation and sense of failure can be felt as you wander through the circles of the elegant exhibition entitled "Inferno" curated by Jean Clair in conjunction with Laura Bossi.
A journey into infernal iconography in the form of over two hundred ancient, modern and contemporary works from the Christian Middle Ages to the twentieth century covering totalitarianism, religious and ideological wars, extermination camps, persecutions, genocides and other human massacres, right through to the last room where we can "see the stars again" with a new awareness that we are indeed the hell we create for ourselves with conflict being an integral part of the human race.
This sums up, in a nutshell, an excursus around infernal imagery associated with the world of the damned designed to celebrate the seven hundredth anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death at the Scuderie del Quirinale that has already hosted exhibitions dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci (2019) and Raphael Sanzio (2020).
