ENZO MARI, UNCONVENTIONAL INTELLECTUAL by Jacqueline Ceresoli
An exhibition of over 250 artefacts on display at Palazzo dell’Arte Triennale in Milan (running until 18th April 2021), curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist with the invaluable support of Francesca Giacomelli, presents an overview of Enzo Mari’s 60-year career of passionate design work.
Mari, a Leonardo-style Renaissance man with encyclopaedic knowledge, has always stood out for his ethically-driven works all designed to last. This retrospective exhibition devised by Paolo Ulian “showcases” and focuses on his line of design thinking according to which “form is everything”.
Critical, grouchy, humble and proud, Mari, the iconoclast, always ask himself whether something was worth doing something before he set about doing it, rather like Bruno Mari, his mentor. His designs are technologically and stylistically innovative and he has always maintained that “artefacts do not have to be liked by everybody, but they should serve everybody”.
The Mari Archive was donated to CASVA-The City of Milan’s Centre for Advanced Studies and Visual Arts by the Mari family and will be hosted at the old market in the QT8 district of Milan. Read all
