Three words are probably destined to describe and characterise architecture over the next five years. The first is eclecticism. The mannerist period is now behind us, when it was enough to imitate the style of one of the masters in the kind of way the Five in New York was inspired by Le Corbusier’s poetics.
Nowadays inspiration is drawn from the entire history of architecture, including the recent and very recent past, either by changing style from one project to the next or by drawing on a range of stylistic references in one single project. This means it is now increasingly difficult to distinguish one architectural designer from another, one school of thought from another.
Although for some time now it has been hard to identify (with absolute certainty) a work by Koolhaas, BIG or Nouvel, we now see architects who previously opted for a very definite stylistic approach, for instance rigorism or neo-traditionalism, freely moving right across the board.
